Biography
Senator Thomas Albert
Thomas A. Albert is a Republican state senator representing Michigan's 18th District, which includes Barry County and portions of Allegan, Calhoun, Kalamazoo, Kent, and Ionia counties. He was born on April 12, 1985, in Grand Rapids and is a resident of Lowell. He is married to Erica Albert and is Catholic.
Education
Albert earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and History from the University of Michigan in 2007. After military service, he obtained a Master of Business Administration in Finance from Michigan State University in 2013, and earned his Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst certification. His early education included St. Patrick School in Ada and Belding High School.
Political Experience
Current Position
Albert was elected to the Michigan Senate in 2022 and currently serves as state senator for the 18th District.
Military Service
Following his university graduation, Albert was commissioned as a Marine Corps officer in 2007. He served on active duty until 2010, then continued as a reservist until 2013. In 2009, he deployed to Iraq as an advisor to the Iraqi Army in the Anbar Province.
Prior Legislative Experience
Before his Senate election, Albert served three terms in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2017 to 2022, representing the 86th District. During his House tenure, he held significant leadership positions, including Chair of the House Appropriations Committee, overseeing the $69 billion state budget, and chaired the Appropriations Subcommittee on Corrections and the Financial Liability Reform Committee.
Notable Achievements
Albert championed legislation addressing pension reform, equalized per-student K-12 funding, no-fault auto insurance reform that lowered insurance rates, prohibition on vaccine mandates for state and local employees, COVID liability protections for businesses, and allowing military experience to count as professional work experience for government positions. He also supported policies protecting the unborn and prohibiting minors from possessing vaping products.
