Biography
Terry Williams: Vermont State Senator
Terry Williams is a Republican politician from Vermont who has represented the Rutland district in the Vermont Senate since January 2023. Born in 1952 in Rutland, Vermont, Williams was raised and educated in Poultney. He is the son of William G. Williams and Josephine Williams.
Williams has deep roots in his community and operates Slate Hill Farm in Poultney, an enterprise previously owned by his grand-aunt and grand-uncle. He is a life member of the National Rifle Association and serves as vice president of the Vermont Federation of Sportsman's Clubs. Additionally, Williams is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans, reflecting his commitment to veteran advocacy. He continues to reside in Poultney with his three adult children and five grandchildren.
Education
Williams graduated from Poultney High School in 1970 and received an associate degree from New Hampshire Technical College in 1972. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Regents College, now known as Excelsior University.
Political Experience
Before his election to the Vermont Senate, Williams served on Poultney's selectboard, including serving as the board's vice chairman. He was also a member of the Rutland Regional Planning Commission and served as a director of the Dodge House Veterans Assistance Office.
Williams ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for the Vermont Senate in 2018 and was nominated in 2020 but unsuccessful in the general election. He was elected to the Vermont Senate in 2022 and was reelected in 2024. In the Senate, he serves on the Senate Committee on Canvassing and as clerk of the Senate Committee on Education.
