Biography

Terry L. Austin is a Republican delegate representing Virginia's 37th House District, which includes Alleghany, Botetourt, and Craig counties, part of Rockbridge County, and the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, and Lexington. Born in 1955 in Roanoke, Virginia, he resides in Buchanan with his wife, Kathy Stevens; they have four children and eleven grandchildren. A Baptist and native of Buchanan, Austin is President/CEO of Austin Electrical Construction Inc., a small business specializing in airport runway lighting that he founded 47 years ago. He serves on the boards of Bank of Botetourt and Carilion Clinic.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Attended Virginia Western Community College.
  • Political Experience: Elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 2014 , currently serving his seventh term. Previously chaired the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors .
  • Current Committees and Roles: Serves on Appropriations, Transportation, Rules, and General Laws; Chairman of the VA250 Commission; Vice Chair of the I-81 Advisory Committee; member of the MEI Project Approval Commission and Governor’s Advisory Council on Revenue Estimates. Senior Republican on House Transportation and budget conferee.
  • Notable Achievements: Championed economic development and transportation in Southwest Virginia, including funding for Interstate 81 upkeep, Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport, and Amtrak service. Five of six bills he introduced in the 2025 session passed; reelected multiple times without primary challenges until recently.
