Biography
Tarik Khan is a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, representing the 194th District in Philadelphia, which includes Manayunk, Roxborough, parts of Chestnut Hill, and East Falls. Born on October 14, 1978, in Philadelphia to a father who emigrated from Pakistan, he is the first Pakistani-American lawmaker and first advanced practice nurse elected to the Pennsylvania legislature. A progressive, Khan defeated incumbent Pam DeLissio in the 2022 Democratic primary and won the general election with 90% of the vote. Notable achievements include passing bills for first-responders' PTSD workers' comp, children's healthcare access, Alzheimer's support, affordable housing, veterans' benefits, faith/LGBTQ+ center security, and anti-SLAPP protections; he also led 2024 efforts against political deepfakes and to repeal restrictive abortion laws.
Education and Political Experience
Khan graduated from Central High School of Philadelphia, Davidson College, Roxborough Hospital School of Nursing, La Salle University, and the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Ph.D. in May 2023. A registered nurse for nearly two decades and nurse practitioner since 2011, he worked during COVID-19, co-created a vaccine program for people with disabilities , founded Enabling Minds for children with developmental disabilities, and served as former President of the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association. Politically, he has advocated for the Affordable Care Act, universal pre-K, Medicare-for-all, the Green New Deal, and opposed a Nicetown gas plant.
