Biography
Representative Tara Hong
Tara T. Hong is a Democratic state representative serving the 18th Middlesex District in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Born on May 17, 2000, in Cambodia, Hong immigrated to Lowell, Massachusetts in 2013 alongside his mother and sister with the help of his stepfather. Despite facing challenges with limited English proficiency and financial constraints upon arrival, he was embraced by the Lowell community, which provided the foundation for his education and civic engagement.
At 24, Hong made history by becoming one of the few candidates in recent Massachusetts legislative races to defeat an incumbent, winning the 2024 primary election against State Representative Rady Mom with 47 percent of the vote compared to Mom's 40 percent. This victory positioned him to become one of the youngest legislators in the state.
Education
Hong's academic journey began at Stoklosa Middle School in Lowell's Acre neighborhood. He subsequently attended Lowell High School, Middlesex Community College, and UMass Lowell, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science with a minor in Criminal Justice.
Political Experience
Hong's involvement in public service began through volunteer work with local nonprofits. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he delivered diapers and food to families in need across Lowell. His professional experience includes roles as:
- Civic Engagement Coordinator at the Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association , where he focused on encouraging voter participation and providing community resources
- Program Coordinator at Project LEARN, supporting Lowell students in achieving educational success
- Program Assistant at the Asian American Center for Excellence & Engagement at UMass Lowell
Hong has also served on several nonprofit boards, including Lowell Litter Krewe, Mill City Grows, and CMAA. His commitment to community-driven change and addressing constituents' concerns directly motivated his decision to run for elected office. He represents neighborhoods including Acre, Lower Highland, Upper Highland, and Pawtucketville within the 18th Middlesex District.
