Biography

Tammy Exum is a Democratic state representative for Connecticut's 19th District, covering parts of West Hartford and Avon. Elected in a special election in April 2019, she serves as Deputy Majority Leader, Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee, and a member of the Human Services Committee.

Tammy Exum, born in Raleigh, NC, is a former elementary school teacher and advocate for education and disabilities. She moved to West Hartford, CT, in 1999 with her husband Earl and their three children . Exum has been active in community leadership, including as former Vice Chair of the West Hartford Board of Education, founding member and former president of the West Hartford Special Education PTA, and former coordinator of the Parent Leadership Training Institute. Notable achievements include co-authoring HB 5001 on children’s mental health and introducing 2021 legislation creating a disability workforce pipeline for career opportunities.
