Biography
Susan Ruiz is a Democratic representative for Kansas House District 23, serving since 2019. She is one of the first two LGBT state representatives in Kansas history and works as a social worker, focusing on social services and veterans' issues.
Education and Political Experience
Ruiz ran for office in 2018 to ensure all Kansans have a voice in the state legislature. As a state representative, she serves on the Veterans & Military Committee, Social Services Budget Committee, Children & Senior Services Committee, and is ranking minority member on the Health and Human Services Committee. Notable additional roles include interim committees on Joint Committee on Bob Bethel Home and Community Based Services and KanCare Oversight, Joint Committee on Child Welfare System Oversight, and Special Committee on Targeted Case Management; she also participates in the Employment First Steering Committee, Transition Transformers Committee, KS Coordinating Council on Early Childhood Developmental Services, KS Health Information Technology Advisory Council, and Statewide Multi-Branch Communities of Practice. Her efforts have contributed to putting Kansas on a positive track post-Brownback era.
