Biography
Susan Rubio is a Democratic member of the California State Senate representing District 22, which spans eastern Los Angeles County and parts of San Bernardino County . Born on December 25, 1970, in Juárez, Mexico, to a former Bracero farm worker, she resides in Baldwin Park, California. Elected in 2018 and reelected in 2022 with 58.5% of the vote, she serves as Senate Assistant Majority Whip and holds leadership roles including Chair of the Senate Insurance Committee, Chair of the San Gabriel Valley Caucus, and Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Domestic Violence. Notable achievements include spearheading the San Gabriel Valley Regional Housing Trust to build hundreds of affordable housing units for low-income families, seniors, and veterans; membership in the Senate Gun Violence Working Group and Working Group on Survivors of Sexual Assault; and service on Governor Gavin Newsom’s Council on Holocaust and Genocide Education and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s Domestic Violence Advisory Council.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Attended East Los Angeles College; earned a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in Education from Azusa Pacific University; received a Doctorate from the University of La Verne.
- Political Experience: Public school teacher for 17-20 years in Baldwin Park and Monrovia districts; served 13 years as an elected official in Baldwin Park, including two terms on the City Council and as City Clerk/Mayor Pro Tem. Elected to California State Senate District 22 in 2018; current committee assignments include Energy, Utilities, and Communications; Health; Governmental Organization; and Joint Committee on Arts; also a member of caucuses such as Latino Legislative Caucus, Legislative Jewish Caucus, Legislative Women’s Caucus, and others.
