Biography

Susan Bysiewicz

Susan Bysiewicz is the 109th Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut, serving her second term since being sworn in on January 4, 2023. Born September 29, 1961, she grew up on a farm in Middletown, Connecticut. As Lieutenant Governor, she serves as president and presiding officer of the Connecticut State Senate, where she presides over debates and can cast votes in case of a tie.

A member of the Democratic Party, Bysiewicz is a business lawyer and job creator who has helped over 60 companies access millions of dollars in capital and create thousands of jobs in Connecticut. She works alongside Governor Ned Lamont to champion women's health, education, and fair elections.

Education

Bysiewicz graduated from Middletown High School, earned her undergraduate degree from Yale University, and completed her law degree from Duke University School of Law. She is also the author of Ella: A Biography of Ella Grasso, Connecticut's 83rd governor.

Political Experience

Bysiewicz has held several significant positions throughout her career:

  • Connecticut House of Representatives : Represented the towns of Middletown, Middlefield, and Durham. During her tenure, she wrote legislation to ban dangerous "drive-through" mastectomies, fought political patronage by writing the law to ban lobbyists from giving gifts to legislators, and advanced women's health protections.

  • Connecticut Secretary of the State : As the 72nd Secretary of the State, she implemented new voting technology throughout the state, including an electronic filing system to reduce voter fraud and a vote-by-phone system for disabled residents. She helped thousands of businesses grow, registered thousands of voters, cut bureaucratic red tape, honored veterans, and fought to keep elections fair.

  • Connecticut Lieutenant Governor : Serves as an advocate for women and girls, small business owners, and veterans. She chairs the Governor's Council on Women and Girls and has fought for pay equity, reproductive freedoms, and gender equality. Her top priority is growing good-paying jobs and investing in education and job training.

Bysiewicz resides in Middletown, Connecticut, with her husband, David Donaldson.
