Biography
Stewart Cathey Jr.
Stewart Cathey Jr. was born on April 19, 1981, in Monroe, Louisiana, to Donna, a public school teacher, and Stewart Sr., a small businessman and member of the Louisiana Army National Guard. Growing up in this environment shaped his values around education and service to others.
Cathey served in the U.S. Army as a commissioned officer and Army Engineer beginning in 2003. He was mobilized with the Army Corps of Engineers for cleanup efforts following Hurricane Katrina and was later deployed to Afghanistan, where he oversaw $250 million in infrastructure development projects. He continues to serve as a Captain in the United States Army Reserves.
Following his military service, Cathey worked in business development for a local manufacturer before establishing his own management consulting firm. He has been a managing partner at the Cathey Group since 2013. Beyond his professional endeavors, he has committed himself to community service through involvement with the local YMCA and Kiwanis boards, as well as engagement with local high schools and higher education institutions.
Education
Cathey earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, graduating in 2006.
Political Experience
Cathey was first elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 2019, representing District 33, which covers Monroe and surrounding areas including Bienville, Claiborne, Lincoln, Morehouse, Ouachita, Union, Webster, and West Carroll parishes. He won that election with 52% of the vote against fellow Republican Wade Bishop. He was re-elected in October 2023 with 53% of the vote and is eligible to serve through the end of the 2028-2032 term.
As a Republican, Cathey currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Forestry, Aquaculture, and Rural Development. He also holds membership on multiple committees including Commerce, Consumer Protection and International Affairs; Local and Municipal Affairs; Environmental Quality; and the Select Committee on Military and Veterans Affairs.
Notable legislative achievements include introducing bills on agricultural and economic development matters, supporting pro-life legislation , and voting in favor of constitutional carry legislation in 2024.
