Biography
Steven Alton Meeks is a Republican representing Georgia House District 178, which includes Bacon and Pierce counties, as well as portions of Appling and Wayne counties. He has served in the Georgia House of Representatives since 2019. A longtime agriculture policy expert, Meeks worked over 12 years for U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, including as Legislative Director for the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, contributing to major farm bills impacting Georgia's agriculture industry. He later served as Chambliss' State Director. In 2010, he joined the family business Burch Farms as Operations Manager and operates his own Nine Run Farms. Notable achievements include the Young Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Georgia’s College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Georgia Trend’s Agribusiness Movers and Shakers recognition, and service on Governor Nathan Deal’s Transition Team. He holds leadership roles such as Chair of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight Committee and Chair of the Subcommittee on Agribusiness, Logistics, and Manufacturing; serves on committees including Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Appropriations, and others. Board positions include Georgia Cotton Commission, Southern Cotton Growers, National Cotton Council delegate, UGA College of Agriculture Deans Advisory Council, Leadership Georgia Board of Trustees, Georgia Easter Seals Board, and Wayne County Chamber of Commerce. He resides in Screven, Georgia, with his wife Joy and son John William, and they are members of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Blackshear.
