Biography of Senator Steve Nass
Stephen Leonard Nass is a Republican politician from Whitewater, Wisconsin, currently serving in the Wisconsin State Senate representing the 11th Senate District since 2015. He has announced he will not run for re-election in 2026, with his term expiring on January 4, 2027.
Born on October 7, 1952, in Whitewater, Wisconsin, Nass has been deeply involved in public service throughout his career. He began his public life when elected to the Whitewater City Council in 1977, serving as Council President from 1978 to 1981.
Nass served 33 years in the Wisconsin Air National Guard, retiring in December 2005 with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. During his military service, he was deployed to Egypt in support of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm in the early 1990s. He also participated in operations enforcing no-fly zones over Iraq and Bosnia. He is an active member of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Currently, Nass owns and manages a small rental housing business with several properties in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
Education
Nass graduated from Whitewater High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1978. He later completed a Master of Science degree in School Business Management, also from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, in 1990.
Political Experience
Before his election to the State Assembly on November 7, 1990, Nass worked as an information analyst and negotiator with the Wisconsin Association of School Boards and later as a payroll benefits analyst for the state Department of Health and Family Services. He was also employed by Sentry Foods for seven years.
Nass served 24 years in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1991 to 2015, holding various committee positions including Chairman of the Committee on Colleges and Universities. He was elected to the Wisconsin Senate in 2014 and has served as Co-Chair of the Senate Committee on Review of Administrative Rules. Additionally, he served on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Board of Visitors from 1979 to 1989.
