Senator Steve Lanier

Steve Lanier is a Republican state senator representing District 2 in New Mexico. He was born and raised in Aztec, New Mexico, on a small farm near Cedar Hill, where he has maintained his residence throughout his life. Growing up, Lanier developed a strong commitment to athletics and teamwork through football and track at Aztec High School, values that shaped his approach to leadership and public service.

Lanier is married to Sandra, who owns a successful graphic design business in Aztec that has served the community since 2001. Together, they have three children, all of whom graduated from Aztec High School and were active in athletics and local service. The family enjoys spending time at Navajo Lake together.

Education and Career

Lanier graduated from Western New Mexico University and pursued a career in education. He spent 28 years as a teacher at Aztec High School, where he taught history and computer science. During his tenure in education, he also served as a football coach and head coach of the high school track and cross-country teams, roles he valued for the opportunity to lead and mentor young athletes. He retired from teaching in 2018.

Political Experience

Lanier's transition into public service began with his election to the San Juan County Commission in 2020, representing District 3. He brought practical problem-solving skills and a commitment to transparency to the position, earning the trust of his community.

In November 2024, Lanier was elected to the New Mexico State Senate for District 2, succeeding retiring Senator Steve Neville. He took office in 2025 and serves as a member of the Senate Finance Committee. His campaign platform emphasizes improving education, supporting rural New Mexicans, reestablishing trust in government, and developing safe, prosperous neighborhoods throughout the state.
