Biography
Steve Hawley is a Republican member of the New York State Assembly representing District 139, which includes portions of Genesee, Monroe, and Orleans Counties. A Batavia native and lifelong Western New York resident, he was first elected in a special election on February 28, 2006, and has been re-elected multiple times, including in 2024. He serves as Deputy Minority Leader and resides in the Town of Batavia with his two sons, Brooks and Cooper. Hawley is the son of the late Assemblyman R. Stephen Hawley and Ellen Hawley. As a former small business owner of Hawley Farms and Stephen M. Hawley & Assoc., LLC , he advocates for tax reform, agriculture, economic growth, and education. Notable achievements include authoring the "Two New Yorks" initiative for a statewide ballot on dividing New York and leading bipartisan efforts to protect Gold Star families and expand college benefits for veterans' spouses and dependents .
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Batavia High School; earned a Bachelor of Education with a Business major from the University of Toledo.
- Military Service: Served seven years in the Ohio Army National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves, reaching the rank of First Lieutenant.
- Political Experience: Previously served in the Genesee County Legislature. In the Assembly, he sits on the Ways and Means, Rules, Veterans' Affairs, Agriculture, and Insurance committees, plus the Subcommittee on Women Veterans. He maintains a district office in Albion, NY, and holds regular office hours and town halls across the district.
