Biography
Sterley Stanley
Sterley S. Stanley is a Democratic member of the New Jersey State Assembly representing Legislative District 18. Born on June 24, 1966, in Karnataka, India, Stanley made history as the first legislator of South Asian descent from Middlesex County when he was sworn into the Assembly in 2021.
District 18 encompasses East Brunswick, Edison, Highland Park, Metuchen, Milltown, South Plainfield, and South River in Middlesex County. The district has the highest percentage of Asian Americans of any legislative district in New Jersey.
Education and Political Experience
Before joining the State Assembly, Stanley served as a two-term East Brunswick councilman, establishing himself as a local leader in his community.
Stanley currently holds several positions within the Assembly:
- Deputy Parliamentarian of the New Jersey State Assembly
- Chairman of the Assembly Regulated Professions Committee
- Vice-Chair of the Assembly Education Committee
- Member of additional Assembly committees
He has been serving in the State Assembly since 2021 and represents the interests of his diverse district at the state level.
