Biography
Steve Meredith is a Republican state senator representing Kentucky's 5th Senate District, which includes Breckenridge, Edmonson, Grayson, Hart, LaRue, and Meade counties. Born on June 21, 1953, in Leitchfield, Kentucky, he is a lifelong resident of the state and a retired hospital CEO with over 40 years of healthcare experience. Elected in November 2016, he assumed office in January 2017 and has been reelected since. Notable achievements include leading Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center as CEO for 30 years, making it the first U.S. hospital to cancel American Hospital Association membership due to opposition to Obamacare, and advocating for accountable government spending and rural healthcare. He holds key committee roles, such as chair of the Budget Review Subcommittee on Human Resources, vice chair of the Health and Welfare Committee and Veterans, Military Affairs, and Public Protection Committee, and co-chair of the Medicaid Oversight and Advisory Committee and Government Contract Review Committee.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduated from Leitchfield High School ; earned two Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and Business Administration from Western Kentucky University ; obtained a Master's degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Minnesota.
- Political Experience: Unsuccessful candidate for Kentucky House of Representatives ; elected to Kentucky Senate District 5 . Prior to politics, served as CEO of Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center and past chair of the Kentucky Hospital Association. Active in community groups including Grayson County Alliance , Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and Knights of Columbus.
