Biography

Stephen J. Cox - Attorney General of Alaska

Stephen J. Cox is the 28th Attorney General of the State of Alaska, a position he has held since August 29, 2025, following his appointment by Governor Mike Dunleavy. As Attorney General, Cox oversees all state legal affairs and serves as the chief prosecutor with authority over all district attorneys. He functions as general counsel to the Governor and executive branch, and represents the State in all civil and criminal cases in federal and state courts.

Cox is 48 years old and a practicing Catholic who attends Holy Family Old Cathedral in Anchorage with his wife, Cristina, and their three children. He is a founding board member of a classical Christian school in South Anchorage and supports the Dominican friars of the Western Province through their Alaska outreach ministry.

Education

Cox holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Texas A&M University. He earned his Juris Doctor degree summa cum laude from the University of Houston Law Center in 2006. He is a member of the Alaska, Texas, and District of Columbia bar associations.

Political Experience

Federal Service: Cox served in the first Trump Administration in several significant roles:
- U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas , where he led a staff of over 120 personnel and directed prosecutions across 43 counties, focusing on violent crime, child exploitation, drug trafficking, money laundering, and white-collar offenses
- Deputy Associate Attorney General and Chief of Staff in the Department of Justice's Office of the Associate Attorney General, overseeing major civil and criminal enforcement efforts, spearheading policy reforms, and serving as executive director of the DOJ Regulatory Reform Task Force
- Member of the William H. Webster Commission reviewing FBI counterterrorism operations

Private Sector: Prior to his current role, Cox served as Senior Vice President and Chief Legal and Strategy Officer at Bristol Bay Industrial, an investment platform of Bristol Bay Native Corporation, where he led legal and strategic initiatives on major utility, energy, and resource projects. From 2011 onward, he was a principal attorney for Apache Corporation's Alaska operations, focusing on oil-and-gas ventures and regulatory coordination in the Cook Inlet region. He also practiced as a senior associate attorney at a multinational law firm in Washington, DC.
