Biography

Representative Stephen M. Casey

Stephen M. Casey has represented District 50 in the Rhode Island House of Representatives since his first election in November 2012. He represents the residents of Woonsocket and resides there with his wife, Debra Casey.

Casey was born on September 12, 1968. Beyond his legislative duties, he works as a firefighter in Woonsocket and serves as secretary of the Paul Deziel Memorial Scholarship Fund. He is an active member of the Rhode Island Freemasons, Rhode Island Shriners, and Woonsocket Firefighters Union Local 732. He is also an Eagle Scout from Troop 725 of Wakefield, Massachusetts.

Education

Casey attended Melrose High School in Massachusetts before earning a bachelor's degree in communications from Boston College in 1990.

Political Experience

Current Positions:
Casey currently serves as chairman of the House Municipal Government and Housing Committee, a position he has held since 2023. He is also a member of the House Corporations Committee, the House Labor Committee, and the House Special Legislation Committee.

Notable Achievements:
In 2023, during the state's housing crisis, he was appointed by Speaker Shekarchi to lead the Municipal Government and Housing Committee. In this role, he was instrumental in passing three legislative packages addressing Rhode Island's housing crisis in the 2023, 2024, and 2025 sessions.

Earlier in his career, Casey led the House Health and Human Services Committee during the 2021 and 2022 sessions, guiding the state's reopening and the healthcare system's emergence from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Casey has also secured funding for community projects including the World War II Memorial Park, Stadium Theatre development, improvements to Woonsocket High School athletic facilities, and music programs at Woonsocket high and middle schools. In 2018, he co-sponsored successful legislation designating communities in the Blackstone Valley as Qualified Opportunity Zones.
