Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen ** represents California's **10th Assembly District, which includes Elk Grove, Florin, Vineyard, and parts of Sacramento. She was elected in 2022 as the first Asian American Pacific Islander woman legislator in the Sacramento region and reelected in 2024.
Born on April 17, 1979, to Vietnamese refugees who fled the Vietnam War by boat, Stephanie Nguyen grew up in Sacramento’s Little Saigon district in a low-income household. She has lived, worked, and served in the Sacramento and Elk Grove communities nearly her entire life. Married to an Elk Grove police officer, she has two daughters. Prior to her Assembly role, she served as executive director of Asian Resources, Inc. , a Sacramento nonprofit aiding low-income, immigrant, refugee, limited English-speaking, formerly incarcerated, and undocumented communities. She was unanimously appointed to the Elk Grove City Council in 2017 as the first Asian American woman in that role, representing District 4, and elected citywide in 2018 with over 65% of the vote.
Education and Political Experience
Nguyen attended Sacramento schools and graduated from California State University, Sacramento. Her political career includes her 2017 appointment and 2018 election to the Elk Grove City Council, followed by her 2022 election to the California State Assembly District 10 , defeating Eric Guerra with 53.8% of the vote after winning the primary with 29.9%. She was reelected in 2024 with 67.6%. In her first term, she served as the first Vietnamese-American Assistant Speaker pro Tempore. She currently serves on Assembly committees including Business and Professions, Governmental Organization, Insurance, Public Employment and Retirement, and Public Safety. Additional roles include Vice Chair of the AAPI Legislative Caucus, Co-Chair of the Select Committee on Child Care Costs, and member of select committees on Biotechnology and Medical Technology, Cybersecurity, Nonprofit Sector, Ports and Goods Movement, Transportation Costs and Impact of the Low Carbon Fuel, and Youth Mental Health and Treatment Accessibility. She has also been appointed to the Council of State Governments West Executive Committee, the Commission on the Status of Women and Girls, and the Seismic Safety Commission.
Notable achievements include championing 2025-26 budget wins such as $30 million for Special Olympics California and $60 million for California Food Banks, as well as authoring legislation like protections for the elderly from financial abuse and allowing abortion training for out-of-state medical students. Several of her bills were passed by the Assembly and signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom.
