Biography

Stavros Anthony - Nevada Lieutenant Governor

Stavros Steve Anthony was born on January 13, 1957, and is a lifelong Las Vegas resident of 44 years. A member of the Republican Party, he is the 37th Lieutenant Governor of Nevada, serving since 2023. Anthony is a retired law enforcement officer with nearly three decades of experience with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, where he rose to the rank of captain overseeing the Financial and Property Crimes Bureau before entering elected office.

Anthony made history in 2022 by becoming the only Republican lieutenant governor in the United States to defeat an incumbent Democrat lieutenant governor, winning his race against Democrat Lisa Cano Burkhead. He currently serves as treasurer of the National Lieutenant Governors Association and as Chairman of the Nevada Commission on Tourism.

Education

Anthony holds advanced degrees from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, including a Master's degree in Political Science/Government and a Ph.D. in Sociology . He also earned a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Wayne State University in 1980.

Political Experience

Anthony's public service includes:

  • Las Vegas City Council : Representing Ward 4, he served three terms and held the position of Mayor Pro Tem for seven years
  • Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents : Elected in 2002 to a four-year term and served a second term, including service as board chairman where he led development of a master plan and system goals
  • Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies : Appointed to the Board of Commissioners

Anthony previously ran unsuccessfully for Nevada's 4th Congressional District, Las Vegas mayor in 2015, and Clark County Commission in 2020, losing the latter race by 15 votes despite requesting a recount.
