Biography
Stan Gunter
Stan Gunter, born Norman Stanley Gunter on May 25, 1959, is a Republican member of the Georgia House of Representatives representing District 8, which covers Union, Towns, Rabun, and parts of White counties in northeastern Georgia. A longtime public servant, he previously served as District Attorney for the Enotah Judicial Circuit , Executive Director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council , and Superior Court Judge for the Enotah Circuit . Elected to the House in 2020, he defeated challengers in the Republican primary and general election, with reelections in 2022 and 2024. Notable achievements include reorganizing the DA’s office for better case management, serving as President of the Georgia District Attorneys’ Association , and community leadership as President of the Union County Chamber of Commerce and local Rotary Club. He is married to Rita since 1982, with two sons and five grandchildren.
Education and Political Experience
Raised in Habersham County, Gunter graduated from Habersham Central High School. He attended college while working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and later earned a law degree, starting a private practice in Blairsville in 1991 focused on real estate law and litigation. Politically, he switched from Democrat to Republican in 2006. In the Georgia House, he chairs the House Judiciary Committee and serves on Agriculture & Consumer Affairs, Appropriations, Economic Development & Tourism, Ethics, Health, and Rules committees. He also served as Deputy Whip in the 2023 session and is a member of the Leadership Georgia class of 2003 and the Atlanta Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society.
