Biography
Spencer Deery is a Republican state senator representing Indiana Senate District 23, which includes Fountain, Parke, Vermillion, and Warren counties, along with portions of Montgomery and Tippecanoe counties. Elected in 2022 in his first bid for office, he assumed office on November 22, 2022, after being sworn in by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Loretta Rush. Notable positions include serving on Senate committees for Commerce and Technology, Education and Career Development, Health and Provider Services, and Utilities; he also represents Indiana on the Midwest Higher Education Compact executive committee to promote best practices among Midwestern public universities. Deery voted against mid-decade redistricting in 2022, one of 21 Republican senators to do so, and has led efforts for local veto power on carbon sequestration projects while focusing on affordability issues like daycare costs.
Education and Political Experience
Deery holds a bachelor’s degree in communications with minors in business and political science, and a master’s degree from the Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration at The George Washington University, where he graduated at the top of his class; he speaks fluent Spanish. Prior to politics, he worked as a publicist at Deseret Book Company in 2008 and as deputy chief of staff at Purdue University under former President Mitch Daniels. An Eagle Scout, he grew up active in Boy Scouts, crediting it with instilling values of duty, honor, and integrity in the American experiment and U.S. Constitution.
