Biography
Simcha Eichenstein is a Democratic Assembly Member representing New York's 48th Assembly District, which includes the neighborhoods of Borough Park, Kensington, and Midwood in Brooklyn. Elected on November 6, 2018, he became the first Chassidic Jewish individual elected to the New York State Legislature. He serves as Assistant Majority Whip, appointed on the first day of the 2023 legislative session, and has sponsored over a dozen bills, including measures for kosher/halal options in correctional facilities, fee waivers on Holocaust reparations, insurance protections for hate crime victims, multiple EBT cards for qualified recipients, and exemptions for Summer Youth Employment earnings in public assistance calculations. Born August 6, 1983, in Brooklyn, he resides in Borough Park and is married to Pearl.
Education and Political Experience
Eichenstein's prior roles include serving on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s legislative affairs team in Albany and as senior intergovernmental staff at City Hall, where he advocated for city priorities and helped pass state legislation. He was a senior aide to New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli for four years, focusing on intergovernmental affairs and community partnerships. Earlier, he worked as political affairs director at a public relations firm, special assistant in the New York State Legislature, and member of Brooklyn’s Community Board 12.
