Biography
Siela Bynoe
Siela A. Bynoe was born in 1967 or 1968 and is a first-generation American. She is a Democrat representing New York State Senate District 6, which encompasses central Nassau County on Long Island, including communities such as Baldwin, Freeport, Garden City, Hempstead, and Malverne. Bynoe is recognized as a housing and education advocate.
Political Experience
Bynoe began her political career in local government, being elected to the Westbury Board of Education in 2010 and serving two terms. In 2014, she won a special election to the Nassau County Legislature, replacing Robert Troiano.
In her most significant electoral achievement, Bynoe defeated New York State Assembly member Taylor Darling in the Democratic primary and defeated Republican Thomas Montefinise in the general election to reach the State Senate. This victory made her the first Black woman to represent the Long Island region in the New York State Senate.
Current Positions and Achievements
As a State Senator, Bynoe serves as Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Libraries. Her legislative focus areas include housing policy and education advocacy, reflecting her background as a champion for these issues throughout her political career.
