Biography
Shelly Hutchinson is a Democratic State Representative for Georgia House District 106 in Gwinnett County, which includes the City of Snellville, unincorporated Snellville, and portions of unincorporated Grayson, Lilburn, and Lawrenceville. First elected in 2018 , she is a social worker, small business owner, mother, wife, and Catholic community volunteer focused on expanding health coverage, gun safety, protecting voting rights, and promoting equality. Born and raised in New Orleans on December 9, she was instilled with values of honesty, commitment, and leadership through her Catholic upbringing. Notable achievements include founding The Social Empowerment Center in 2002—a mental health and social services center recognized as the #1 fastest-growing business owned or operated by UGA alumni in 2014—and serving as a part-time professor at the UGA School of Social Work. She chairs the Local Interagency Planning Team and Children In Need of Services Committee, belongs to organizations like Together Georgia, National Association of Social Workers, and Georgia Society for Clinical Social Work, and sits on the UGA Alumni Board. Current committee assignments: Budget & Fiscal Affairs Oversight, Energy/Utilities & Telecommunications, Juvenile Justice, Public Health, and Regulated Utilities.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: BA in Criminal Justice from LSU; Masters in Social Work from UGA .
- Professional Experience: Began career in social services and child welfare at Fulton County DFCS; founded and operates The Social Empowerment Center ; part-time professor at UGA School of Social Work.
