Shawn Sweeney grew up in Montpelier, Vermont, near the State House. Before entering politics, he built a diverse career spanning hospitality, entertainment, and construction. He owned the Front & Outback nightclub in Burlington and later worked in the feature film business in New York City. In 1998, he returned to Vermont and transitioned into the construction industry, eventually establishing his own design-build company, which he has owned and operated for over 20 years.

Sweeney has been deeply involved in his Shelburne community through various volunteer roles and civic engagement. He coached youth sports teams and served as head official for the Burlington Country Club swim team. He ran the Champlain Valley School District youth football program for many years and volunteered extensively at Shelburne Community School and Champlain Valley Union High School. Additionally, he served on the Shelburne Planning Commission starting in early 2023 and has been a board member of Nature Israel/ASPNI since 2008, where he served as Vice Chair.

Education

Sweeney graduated from Paul Smith's College and the University of Houston.

Political Experience

Sweeney is a Democrat representing the Chittenden-7 District in the Vermont House of Representatives, where he has served since 2025. He currently serves as Clerk of the House Committee on Corrections and Institutions. His legislative term extends until January 6, 2027.
