Biography
Sharon Moriwaki is a Democratic State Senator representing District 12 in Hawaii, covering Waikīkī, Ala Moana, Kaka'ako, and McCully. Born and raised in the Sheridan area and on St. Louis Heights, she has focused her career on public service, housing solutions, education funding, clean energy, and community advocacy. Notable achievements include establishing a multi-agency task force for housing, serving as Vice-Chair of Ways and Means to secure school improvements and resources for low-income families, and earning national awards from the National Education Association, American Society of Public Administration, and National Association of State Personnel Executives. She also received the Children's Rights Council "Best Advocate for Hawaii Children and Families" Award, the City's Good Neighborhood Award for environmental leadership with Makiki Stream Stewards, the "Unsung Hero" Award from Hawaii's Thousand Friends, and the UH Robert Clopton Award for Outstanding Community Service.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Ph.D. from the University of Southern California; law degree from Loyola Law School .
- Early Involvement: Student body secretary at Kaimuki High; major figure in the 1979 Statewide Women's Conference; chaired the 90th anniversary celebration of Okinawan arrival in Hawaii; coordinated Hawaii's Dukakis for President Campaign.
- Political and Professional Roles: Appointed by Governor Waihee as Labor Department Deputy Director and later Director of Human Resources, where she implemented major personnel reforms; Hawaii Court System Administrative Director; UH Assistant Vice President. Currently, Hawaii State Senate Vice-Chair of Ways and Means; co-hosts ThinkTech Hawaii's "Hawaii: The State of Clean Energy"; vice-president of the Hawaii Technology Institute; organizes Democratic Party's Good Neighbor Store aiding over 1,000 underprivileged children. Community work includes preserving Kakaako's makai shoreline and aiding houseless families through her church.
