Biography
Sharon MacDonell is a Democratic member of the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the 56th District since January 1, 2023. The district includes parts of Troy, Clawson, Royal Oak, Birmingham, and Bloomfield Township in Oakland County. She was elected in 2022, defeating Republican Mark Gunn, and reelected in 2024 against Republican Dave Kniffen with 57% of the vote. A journalist and community activist, she has lived in Troy for nearly 30 years with her husband, Bill Kubota, and two daughters. Notable achievements include co-founding Troy Indivisible, serving as precinct delegate for 15 years, chairing the Troy Democratic Club, leading the effort to save the Troy Public Library, recalling an incompetent mayor, and exposing a corrupt city manager. Her legislative priorities focus on public education funding, voter rights, fighting discrimination, health care access, infrastructure, economy, and green initiatives. She serves as Majority Vice Chair of the House Committee on Transportation, Mobility, and Infrastructure, and on committees including Energy, Communications, and Technology; Families, Children, and Seniors; and Health Policy .
