Biography

Sean Garballey is a Democratic State Representative for the 23rd Middlesex District in Massachusetts, which includes parts of Arlington and West Medford. Born on February 22, 1985, in Arlington, he was first elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in a special election on March 4, 2008, at age 22, following the incumbent's move to the state Senate. He has held the position continuously since, winning re-election in 2024 with 99% of the vote, and his current term extends until January 6, 2027.

Notable achievements include sponsoring Massachusetts' pioneering legislation opening public higher education to students with autism, Down Syndrome, and other intellectual/developmental disabilities—the first such law in the U.S. He co-sponsored the Foster Parents Bill of Rights and advocates for fully funding higher education for foster and adopted children at public universities. Garballey chairs the House Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change and serves on committees including redistricting, ways and means, economic development, and joint committees on higher education and technologies.
