Biography
Sean Michael Dougherty is a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, serving District 172 in Northeast Philadelphia since 2025. A native of Philadelphia's Pine Valley section, he defeated incumbent Kevin Boyle in the 2024 Democratic primary amid controversy and narrowly won the general election against Republican Aizaz Gill by two percent. As a state representative, he prioritizes keeping Northeast Philadelphia safe, ensuring a fair justice system, funding public schools, creating good-paying jobs, and protecting reproductive freedom.
Education and Political Experience
- Attended St. Albert the Great School, playing basketball in local leagues.
- Earned a BA in Political Science with minors in Criminal Justice and Psychology from Chestnut Hill College, where he was men's basketball team captain and organized canned food drives; worked summers at International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 98.
- Obtained a law degree from Temple University Beasley School of Law in 2019.
- Clerked for Superior Court Judge Daniel D. McCaffery; served as Assistant Public Defender at the Defender Association of Philadelphia from 2020; later associate attorney at The Duffy Firm.
- Elected in November 2024 to represent the 172nd District.
