Scott A. Slater was born on May 28, 1975, in Providence, Rhode Island. He is a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives representing District 10, a position he has held since winning a special election in November 2009. He succeeded his father, Thomas C. Slater, who served seven terms in the House before his passing.

Outside of his legislative work, Slater is employed as a budget analyst for the City of Providence. He is married to Bianca Rodriguez and has two daughters, Mia and Madeline.

In 2023, he served as the primary sponsor of legislation allowing the state's recreational cannabis dispensaries to advertise their products, addressing a previous prohibition that had placed Rhode Island businesses at a competitive disadvantage compared to dispensaries in neighboring states like Massachusetts.

Beyond cannabis policy, Slater has introduced legislation addressing healthcare and social services, including proposals to increase daily payment rates to nursing facilities and create income-sensitive subsidy programs for low-income households to manage energy utility costs.
