Biography

Schuyler T. VanValkenburg is a Democratic State Senator representing District 16 in Virginia, which includes parts of Henrico County. Born on June 5, 1982, in Charlotte, North Carolina, he is a public school teacher at Glen Allen High School, teaching History and U.S. Government, and a father of three. He previously served in the Virginia House of Delegates for District 72 from 2018 to 2024 before being elected to the Senate in 2023 . Notable achievements include leading efforts on education policy as the only public school teacher in the Senate and chair of the Subcommittee on Public Education, passing the Virginia Voting Rights Act, establishing an independent redistricting commission, advancing commonsense gun safety legislation, protecting reproductive freedom, expanding healthcare access, and increasing voting access. He serves on the Senate Committee on Education and Health.
