Biography
Saud Anwar is a Democratic State Senator from Connecticut serving the 3rd State Senate District, which represents East Hartford, East Windsor, Ellington, and South Windsor. He holds the position of Deputy President Pro Tempore of the Connecticut State Senate and chairs the Public Health Committee. As a physician specializing in lung diseases and critical care medicine, he currently serves as Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Manchester Memorial and Rockville General Hospitals.
Anwar is recognized for his humanitarian work, having organized medical missions for disaster relief in Haiti and Pakistan. He has received numerous awards for his community leadership, including the FBI Director Robert Mueller Award for Community Leadership and Alliance Building, the Anti-Defamation League's Torch of Liberty Award, and the National Council of Community and Justice's Human Relations Award.
Education
Anwar earned his Doctor of Medicine ** from Aga Khan University . He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Illinois and received specialized training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Yale University . He holds a **Master's Degree in Public Health from Yale University.
Political Experience
Anwar was first elected to public office in 2011 as a member of South Windsor's Town Council. He served two terms as mayor of South Windsor: from 2013 to 2015 and from 2017 to 2019. He was first elected to the Connecticut State Senate in February 2019 and has served continuously since then, with his current term set to end in 2027.
In the State Senate, Senator Anwar has focused on early childhood care, pandemic recovery, and affordability. He serves as Chair of the Public Health Committee and Vice Chair of the Insurance & Real Estate and Housing committees, while holding membership on the Appropriations and Human Services committees. He previously served as Vice Chair of the Public Health Committee from 2019 to 2023.
