Biography
Sarah Silva
Sarah Silva is a Democratic member of the New Mexico House of Representatives representing District 53, which encompasses Dona Ana and Otero counties. She has served in this position since 2025. Born in Vado, Silva was raised in the Mesilla Valley in a farming community that shaped her values of honesty, integrity, hard work, and optimism.
Silva currently works as a coach and consultant, operating her own consulting business that trains and coaches community-oriented people and organizations. She is also a board member for the Native Land Institute. She resides in House District 53 with her spouse Heath and their blended family.
Education and Background
Silva graduated from the University of San Francisco, where she received the Pedro Arrupe award, an honor given for the promotion of justice and a desire to seek the greatest good. After completing college, she worked as an organizer in the Bay Area before returning to New Mexico in 2009.
Political Experience
Since returning to the Mesilla Valley, Silva has been actively involved in community organizing and advocacy. Her notable achievements include successfully organizing campaigns to hold big banks accountable, protecting more than 200 families from foreclosure in Southern New Mexico, raising the minimum wage in Las Cruces, designating the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks as a national monument, supporting young immigrants applying for legal status through DACA, and incorporating Anthony, New Mexico, as a city.
