Biography

Sarah McBride is a Democratic representative for Delaware's at-large congressional district , serving as the state's sole member of the U.S. House of Representatives since January 2025. She is the first openly transgender person elected to Congress. Born on August 9, 1990, in Wilmington, Delaware, McBride has been a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, healthcare expansion, workers' rights, and social safety nets.

Education and Political Experience

McBride demonstrated early interest in politics, volunteering on campaigns at age 14 and leading the Delaware chapter of Young Democrats by 17. She worked on Jack Markell's 2008 gubernatorial campaign and served as an aide to Attorney General Beau Biden in 2010. She also interned in the Obama-Biden White House.

Her career includes roles with former Governor Jack Markell and as national spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign. In 2013, she led efforts to pass Delaware's landmark non-discrimination law based on gender identity, earning the Order of the First State, the state's highest civilian honor.

Elected to the Delaware State Senate for the 1st District in 2020, she served until 2025 as the first openly transgender state senator in U.S. history. She spoke at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, the first openly transgender person to address a major party convention.
