Biography
Sarah Trone Garriott
Sarah Trone Garriott is an American politician and minister serving as a member of the Iowa Senate representing District 14, which encompasses Waukee, Adel, Van Meter, and portions of West Des Moines and Clive in Dallas County. A member of the Democratic Party, she was first elected in November 2020 and assumed office on January 11, 2021. She is currently serving her second term in the Iowa State Senate.
Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Garriott is an *ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America *. She has worked as a hospital chaplain and parish pastor throughout her career in ministry.
Political Experience
Garriott has established herself as a strong Democratic performer in competitive central Iowa districts. She defeated Republican incumbent Jake Chapman in her 2020 state Senate race, a victory cited as a major win for Iowa Democrats. She is recognized as the only Democrat in Iowa in recent years who has consistently won competitive elections in Republican-leaning districts.
In the Iowa Senate, Garriott serves as the ranking member of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee. She also serves on the Education Committee and holds positions on the Council on Health and Human Services, the Human Rights Board, and the Mental Health and Disability Services Commission.
In May 2025, Garriott announced her candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in Iowa's 3rd congressional district, seeking to bring her legislative experience to Congress.
Current Work
Since 2017, Garriott has worked as the Coordinator of Interfaith Engagement for the Des Moines Area Religious Council, where she focuses on bringing diverse religious communities together to address food insecurity through the organization's Food Pantry Network.
