Biography
Senator Sarah Anthony ** represents Michigan's **21st Senate District, covering mid-Michigan areas including Lansing. Born on December 2, 1983, in Lansing, she is single and a Christian. She has made history as the first African American woman elected to both the Michigan House of Representatives and the Michigan Senate from mid-Michigan, and in 2023, became the first Black woman to chair the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee. She serves as First Vice-Chairperson of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus and is an influential leader in the Senate Democratic Caucus. Notable achievements include passing the CROWN Act to end race-based hair discrimination, ending child marriage, advancing Michigan Reconnect for workforce development and higher education, and sponsoring bills protecting workers’ and women’s rights, college affordability, veteran support, and housing. Before the Capitol, she was the youngest Black woman to serve on a U.S. county commission , holding roles like chair and vice chair, and focused on health care access, social justice, and services for seniors and families. From 2010, she spent nearly a decade as deputy and interim executive director of the Michigan College Access Network, aiding students' access to higher education. She has earned national recognition in The New York Times, Essence, The New Yorker, and Politico, and been named Legislator of the Year by business, nonprofit, education, and social justice groups.

- Political Experience: Over 20 years in public service, including staff in State Representative Joan Bauer's office; Ingham County Commissioner; Michigan House ; Michigan Senate . Community involvement includes boards for Capital Area United Way, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Greater Lansing Food Bank, and membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Ingham County Democratic Party, and Lansing NAACP Branch.
