Biography
Sandra R. Williams is a Democrat who formerly represented Ohio's 21st Senate District , covering the eastern two-thirds of Cleveland and suburbs including Bratenahl, Cleveland Heights, Garfield Heights, Newburgh Heights, Shaker Heights, and University Heights. Prior to the Senate, she served in the Ohio House of Representatives for the 11th District . A Cleveland native with over three decades in public service, she worked as a corrections officer, probation officer, parole officer, mediator, and legislative aide. She served in the United States Army Reserve and was honorably discharged. Notable roles include Ranking Member on Senate committees like Energy and Public Utilities, Workforce and Higher Education, Education, and Ways and Means; chair of House Economic Development; and vice chair of House Public Utilities. She co-sponsored House Bill 6 and served on a gubernatorial task force to improve community-police relations. Williams resigned from the Senate in June 2022 for a private-sector role as Director of State Government Affairs at Charter Communications-Spectrum. She ran for Cleveland City Mayor in 2021, was Vice Chairwoman of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party, and has taught at Tiffin University and Cleveland State University. She is affiliated with groups like the Federated Democratic Women of Ohio, National Council of Negro Women, and Black Women's Political Action Committee.
