Biography
Samuel A. Azzinaro is a Democratic member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, representing District 37 in Westerly since his election in November 2008. A retired textile worker, business owner, carpenter, and father of five, he previously served 12 years on the Westerly Town Council, including four years as president, and five years on the Westerly Recreation Board, including three as chair. Azzinaro is a military veteran who served four years in the United States National Guard and four years in the Army Reserve, including two years of active duty, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant .
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Graduate of Westerly High School and Rhode Island School of Design.
- Political Experience: Elected to Rhode Island House District 37 in 2008; currently serves as Chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee and House Rules Committee, with additional roles on the House Innovation and Technology Committee, House Special Legislation Committee, and others . Previously held leadership positions such as Deputy Majority Leader and Vice Chairman of House Health, Education and Welfare Committee.
Notable Achievements
- Sponsored laws protecting veterans, including fee-free Bronze Star license plates , National Guard tax exemptions , and protections against unethical veteran claims assistance .
- Enacted legislation requiring large employers to post veterans' benefits information and improving law enforcement communication with autistic motorists .
- Prime sponsor of a House study commission on beach erosion prevention.
- Other accomplishments include allowing liquor stores to open at 10 a.m. Sundays and prohibiting price gouging during emergencies.
