Biography
Samra G. Brouk is a Democrat and Working Families member representing New York's 55th Senate District in Monroe County, including East and West Irondequoit, Webster, Penfield, Perinton, Fairport, Pittsford, East Rochester, and the eastern portion of Rochester. The daughter of Ethiopian immigrants, she was born and raised in Rochester and nearby Pittsford. Notable achievements include chairing the Senate Mental Health Committee, passing legislation for the 9-8-8 mental health crisis lifeline, improving maternal mental health screenings, the Student Lifeline Act, authorizing Medicaid billing for Licensed Creative Arts Therapists, establishing a Black Youth Suicide Prevention Task Force, and expanding access to doula care to address maternal health disparities. She also secured the largest school aid increase for her district, budget investments in mental health workforce with first cost-of-living adjustments in over a decade, and recognition as a 2025 Women of Distinction Honoree and New York State Senate Veterans' Hall of Fame Honoree.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a B.A. in Psychology from Williams College.
- Early Career: Served in the U.S. Peace Corps as a health educator in rural Guatemala; worked at non-profits including DoSomething and Chalkbeat; spent a decade in non-profit community development building educational, environmental, and senior services initiatives in New York State.
- Political Experience: Elected in 2020 after flipping the 55th District seat from Republican incumbent Rich Funke ; won with 57% of the vote. Serves on committees including Aging, Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Education, Elections, Health, and Women's Issues. Launched campaign in November 2019.
