Biography

Sami Scheetz is a Democratic politician, community organizer, union representative for Teamsters Local 238, and small business owner. He represented Iowa House District 78 from 2023 to 2025, becoming the first Arab American to serve in the Iowa General Assembly. He won his 2022 election by over 3,700 votes and ran unopposed in 2024. Appointed to the Linn County Board of Supervisors for District 2 in April 2025, he focuses on expanding public services, improving infrastructure, and supporting working families. Scheetz served on the Iowa House committees for Commerce, Labor, State Government, and Ways and Means. He lives in Cedar Rapids with his wife, Giovana, and daughter, Sophia.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Graduated from George Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, where he was student body president and a swimmer. Earned a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University on scholarship; studied abroad in Argentina and the United Arab Emirates, working for the State Department.
  • Political Experience: Inspired by Barack Obama, organized for Democrats in Iowa for over a decade. Announced Senate candidacy in 2021 but ran for House District 78 instead, winning in 2022. Served in Iowa House General Assemblies 90 and began 91 . Currently Linn County Supervisor.
