Biography

Samakab Hussein

Samakab Hussein is a Minnesota state representative currently serving his second term representing District 65A in Saint Paul. Born on October 12, 1980, in Somalia, Hussein immigrated to the United States at age 14. He is a business owner and the first Somali-American to represent Saint Paul in the state legislature, as well as Saint Paul's first-ever Somali American candidate to win a major party endorsement for elected office. A longtime advocate for the city's East African community, Hussein secured the Democratic-Farmer-Labor endorsement with unanimous support before his election in 2022.

Education

Hussein earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business and Accounting from Saint Mary's University in 2013. He further pursued graduate education, completing a Master of Arts in Advocacy and Political Leadership from Metropolitan State University in 2023.

Political Experience

Hussein was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2022 and is currently serving his second term representing District 65A, which encompasses Ramsey County. Within the legislature, he holds significant committee assignments, serving as Co-Vice Chair of Legacy Finance and holding positions on Housing Finance and Policy and Workforce, Labor, and Economic Development Finance and Policy committees.
