Biography

Samuel Lewis Zager is a Democratic state representative for Maine House District 116, serving Portland neighborhoods including Deering Center, Deering Highlands, Woodfords Corner, Rosemont, Libbytown, Westgate, and Stroudwater. A family physician in Portland, he was first elected in November 2020, assumed office on December 2, 2020, and is currently in his third term as of 2026. Notable achievements include serving on the Maine Legislature’s Committee on Health and Human Services, which oversees areas like MaineCare/Medicaid, public health, mental health services, and child welfare; being a lifetime fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians; board service with the Portland Public Library and Maine Academy of Family Physicians; and military veteran status as a U.S. Navy intelligence officer from 1993 to 2004, recognized as a Secretary of the Navy Distinguished Graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. His priorities include climate action, COVID-19 recovery, dismantling systemic racism, universal healthcare, firearm safety, and public education equity.
