Biography

Sam Singh

Samir Singh was born on March 4, 1971, in Livonia, Michigan. His parents immigrated to Michigan from India in the 1960s seeking opportunity and the American Dream. From an early age, Singh learned the value of civic engagement and giving back to his community.

Singh is married to Kerry Ebersole Singh and has built a career spanning over 25 years in public service, philanthropy, and nonprofit leadership in the mid-Michigan region. He is a Democrat representing Michigan's 28th Senate District, which includes portions of Ingham, Clinton, and Shiawassee counties, encompassing areas of Lansing, East Lansing, DeWitt, and Williamston.

Singh holds the distinction of being the first Indian American elected to the Michigan Senate. He currently serves as Majority Floor Leader, responsible for scheduling and managing day-to-day legislative operations during session.

Education

Singh earned a Bachelor's degree in History from Michigan State University with a Global Specialization.

Political Experience

Local Government:
Singh began his public service career in 1995 when, at age 24, he was elected to the East Lansing City Council, where he served three terms. He later served as Mayor of East Lansing and was the first person of color to hold that position.

State House:
Singh served three terms as a Michigan State Representative from 2013 to 2018, representing House District 69. During his tenure, he championed K-12 education, environmental protection, and economic development. In 2016, his Democratic colleagues selected him as Democratic Leader for the 2017-18 session.

State Senate:
Singh was elected to the Michigan Senate in 2022 and is serving his first term in the chamber. He serves as chair of the Oversight Committee and holds positions on the Government Operations, Energy and Environment, and Natural Resources and Agriculture committees. He also serves on multiple Appropriations Subcommittees covering Environment, Great Lakes and Energy; Agriculture and Natural Resources; General Government; Department of Education; and Universities and Community Colleges.

Nonprofit Leadership:
Before his current senate role, Singh served as President and CEO of the Michigan Nonprofit Association , Executive Director of Volunteer Centers of Michigan , senior consultant for the New Economy Initiative , and CEO of Public Policy Associates . He has served on the boards of more than 20 nonprofit organizations and is a gubernatorial appointee to the Michigan Community Service Commission.
