Biography

Samuel A. Douglass is an American politician from Vermont who served as a Republican representing the Orleans District in the Vermont Senate from January 2025 until his resignation on October 27, 2025. Born in Newport City and raised in Jay and North Troy, he comes from a multi-generational family with deep community roots. He previously ran unsuccessfully for the same seat in 2022 against incumbent Robert A. Starr, but won in 2024 after Starr's retirement by defeating Democrat Katherine Sims. Douglass resigned amid backlash over leaked comments in a national Young Republicans group chat, which included derogatory remarks about people from India; he apologized for the offense caused. Notable positions include chairman of the Vermont Young Republicans and Orleans County Republican Committee, as well as serving on Troy's Board of Civil Authority as a Justice of the Peace. Outside politics, he works as a crisis interventionist for Lamoille County Mental Health Services, a real estate agent for Great Northern Land Company, manages an organic family farm with his wife , and runs a small online/retail business. He volunteers with Meals on Wheels and the Troy Town Revitalization Committee.
