Biography
Sam Bell is a Democratic state senator representing District 5 in Providence, Rhode Island. A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, he was first elected in 2018 and assumed office on January 1, 2019, succeeding Paul Jabour. Born on July 7, 1989, Bell is a geologist by profession, married to Samantha Weiser—who serves as chairwoman of the Rhode Island Democratic Women's Caucus and works for Hasbro—with whom he has one son; they reside in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood and both identify as Jewish and bisexual.
Education and Political Experience
Bell holds a degree from an unspecified alma mater and transitioned from activism to politics with his 2018 election to the Rhode Island State Senate. Notable achievements include advocating for affordable housing, stronger public education, justice for people of color and the LGBTQ+ community, and challenging party leadership to advance progressive values for working families. In 2022, he proposed legislation to impose fines and double taxes on those refusing the COVID-19 vaccine.
