Biography
Sade Elhawary is a Democratic member of the California State Assembly representing District 57, which covers communities in Los Angeles including Exposition Park, South Los Angeles, and Downtown Los Angeles. Born on December 19, 1987, in Los Angeles to Egyptian and Guatemalan immigrant parents, she is an educator, community organizer, foster parent, and advocate for social justice who has served in the Assembly since 2024. Notable achievements include helping establish the Fremont High School Wellness Center to address health disparities, securing the School Climate Bill of Rights to reduce racial profiling in schools, and playing a key role in founding the Nelson Mandela School for Social Justice, where she shaped its curriculum. She served as Youth Engagement Manager on Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass's campaign and has initiated 19 bills in her session . Elhawary identifies as LGBTQ+ and lives in South Los Angeles with her foster daughter Makailah.
