Biography

Saddam Azlan Salim is a Democrat representing District 37 in the Virginia State Senate, which includes all of Fairfax City and Falls Church City, and parts of Fairfax County. Born on January 1, 1990, in Noakhali, Bangladesh, he is a first-generation immigrant who experienced severe drought and the 1998 flood in his youth. A financial consultant and Muslim, he was elected in 2023 after winning the Democratic primary in an upset against a long-time incumbent and the general election with nearly 70% of the vote. Sworn in January 2024, he serves on key committees including Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources, Courts of Justice, Privileges and Elections, and Rehabilitation and Social Services. Notable roles include the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, Information Technology Advisory Council, and GMU Institute for Immigration Research. He has been active in Democratic organizations as Co-Chair of the Providence District Democratic Committee, Vice President of Fairfax Young Democrats, and founding member of AAPI and FCDC Black Caucus.
