Biography

Sabrina Cervantes, California State Senator

Sabrina Cervantes is a Democratic member of the California State Senate, representing the 31st Senate District. She is a lifelong resident of Riverside County and a working mother of triplets. Cervantes is known as a progressive advocate for education, healthcare, economic development, and social equity in the Inland Empire.

Cervantes is one of the first openly LGBTQ+ Latinas from her region to serve in the California Legislature and the first member of the Legislature to give birth to triplets while in office. She is an active member of the California Latino Legislative Caucus, the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, and the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus, and previously served as chair of the California Latino Legislative Caucus—the only representative from the Inland Empire to hold that role.

Education

Sabrina Cervantes earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of California, Riverside. She also completed an executive education program at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. In addition, she has served on advisory boards for the University of California, Riverside School of Public Policy and the UCR Presley Center of Crime & Justice Studies.

Political Experience

Sabrina Cervantes was first elected to the California State Assembly in 2016, representing the 58th Assembly District, which encompasses parts of northwestern Riverside County and portions of San Bernardino County. She served in the Assembly from 2016 to 2024, where she chaired the Assembly Committee on Jobs, Economic Development, and the Economy, as well as the Assembly Select Committee on Veteran Employment and Education. She also served on committees related to Banking & Finance, Communications & Conveyance, and Public Employees & Retirement.

In November 2024, Cervantes was elected to the California State Senate, representing the 31st District. She is now a member of key Senate committees, including the Senate Appropriations Committee, Banking and Financial Institutions, Governmental Organization, Insurance, the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, and the Rules Committee. During her legislative career, she has authored or co‑authored dozens of bills, with 49 signed into law, covering areas such as maternal mental health, student financial aid, protections for survivors of sexual assault, and support for veterans and working families.

Through her advocacy, she has secured over $650 million in state investments for programs that strengthen the economy, improve wildfire resilience, expand voting protections, and increase access to open space and critical services for children, veterans, and families in the Inland Empire.
