Biography

S.J. Howell is an American politician and a member of the Democratic Party, currently representing House District 100 in the Montana House of Representatives. They made history as the first non-binary person elected to the Montana state legislature, alongside Zooey Zephyr as one of the first two openly transgender persons in the legislature. Howell was initially elected to the 95th district in 2022, defeating Republican Lauren Subith by over 2,000 votes, and sworn in on January 2, 2023. Due to redistricting, they successfully ran for and won the 100th district in the 2024 election, securing 1,220 votes against Republican Tim Garrison's 467.
